Why RYSTOR Electrolytes Are Made Without Erythritol

min read | Clean Ingredients & Hydration
If you’ve spent any time shopping for electrolyte drinks, you’ve probably noticed how many of them display “zero sugar” on the front label while listing erythritol in the ingredient panel.
That’s not necessarily deceptive. Erythritol is a legal, widely used sweetener. But if you’re someone who prefers to know exactly what’s in your drink and why, it’s worth understanding what erythritol is, why many brands use it, and why we chose a different path at RYSTOR.
What Is Erythritol?
Erythritol is a sugar alcohol — a category of sweeteners that occurs naturally in small amounts in some fruits and fermented foods. It has very few calories, which is one reason it became popular in keto, paleo, and low-carb products.
It appears in many zero-sugar and low-carb hydration products today, often alongside other sweeteners or flavor systems.
Why Brands Use It
From a formulation standpoint, erythritol makes sense for many products. It is:
-
Sweet without adding sugar to the label
-
Commonly used in zero-sugar products
-
Bulky enough to add physical volume to powder formulas
That last point is worth noting. Because erythritol adds bulk, it can also affect the overall composition of powder formulas. For consumers who are paying for electrolyte support, the ingredient list is worth reading.
Why Some People Prefer to Avoid It
Many zero-sugar hydration products use erythritol, a sugar alcohol that some people prefer to avoid.
Like other sugar alcohols, erythritol may not be tolerated the same way by everyone. Some people have no issues at all. Others prefer to avoid sugar alcohols as a personal choice, especially if they are already mindful about digestion, gut comfort, or specific dietary preferences.
There is also ongoing research into erythritol and various health markers. A 2023 observational study published in Nature Medicine noted an association between erythritol blood levels and cardiovascular event risk. It is important to note that this was not proof of cause and effect, and more research is needed.
We mention it because we believe customers deserve access to the broader conversation around the ingredients they consume regularly.
Why We Chose Stevia Instead
When formulating RYSTOR, we wanted a sweetener that was:
-
Plant-based
-
Made without sugar
-
Not a sugar alcohol
-
Simple and recognizable
Organic Stevia Leaf Extract fit those criteria. Stevia comes from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant and is not a sugar alcohol, which is one reason we chose it for RYSTOR.
We are not making medical claims about stevia being superior for everyone. Sweetener preference is personal. But for us, stevia aligned best with our goal of keeping the ingredient list clean and straightforward.
How We Think About Every Ingredient
The erythritol decision is a good example of how we approach formulation at RYSTOR overall.
Every ingredient goes through the same simple filter:
Does it need to be here, and can we explain it clearly?
That is how we landed on:
-
Himalayan Pink Salt as our sodium source
-
Potassium Chloride for potassium
-
Magnesium Malate for magnesium
-
Crystallized Grapefruit, Grapefruit Oil, and Grapefruit Juice for flavor
-
Organic Stevia Leaf Extract for sweetness
No artificial dyes. No sugar. No erythritol. No ingredients we can’t explain in plain English.
The Short Version
We did not leave erythritol out of RYSTOR because we think it is dangerous.
We left it out because we believe in keeping our formula clean and simple — and because we know some customers actively prefer to avoid sugar alcohols.
If you read labels carefully, we want you to feel confident reading ours.
Clean hydration. No compromise.
